In summer 2009, the Rotary International golf community meets in Kitzbühel. More than 320 golfers from around the world will participate in the Rotary Golf World Championship 2009. The tournament, which has been fully booked for months, takes place from 5 - 11 July on 3 golf courses in and around Kitzbühel. Hosting the International Golfing Fellowship of Rotarians is a highly coveted honour among member countries due the association’s emphasis on international commitment. As a result, each year the event is hosted on a different continent. In 2008, the event took place in Niagara Falls in Canada, and in 2007 in Manila (Philippines).

The world championship starts on Tuesday 7 July and ends on Friday. The venues for the event are 3 golf clubs situated in and around Kitzbühel:
On Monday 6 July, the prelude to the event week takes place in the centre of Kitzbühel, where the players are presented to the public at the flag rising ceremony. This is followed by a cocktail reception for over 400 people at Hotel Zur Tenne.

Sunday 5 July and Monday 6 July are designated as arrival and official training days for the ca. 320 registered golfers. Those who have not managed to secure a place in the competition can apply to be placed on the waiting list. However the list is considerably long. Non-golfer Rotarians are also well provided for thanks to an exciting range of fringe events.

Rotary was founded in 1905 by the lawyer Paul Harris. It is the world's oldest service club, in which women and men come together for charitable purposes and to promote peace and goodwill. The motto of the Rotary is "Service Above Self". Individual clubs organise charity events, support aid agencies, and develop and promote social relief programmes.

Kitzbühel is known as the "golf centre of the Alps" thanks to its two 18-hole golf courses (Schwarzsee and Eichenheim), two 9-hole golf courses (Rasmushof and Golfclub Kitzbühel) and a further 10 golf courses within a 50 km radius. Golf has been played in the famous ski resort since 1955.
